Move over, Jimmy Buffett... "The Georgia Road Geek" has taken over the Conch Republic!!!

Today, around 4 PM, Mary and I finally arrived in Key West. Mary and I left Atlanta Saturday morning and made stops in Sarasota and Fort Myers.

So far, we have seen Mary's old neighborhood and school in Sarasota and toured the Edison and Ford Estates in Fort Myers.

This morning around 9 AM, we departed Fort Myers and got back on I-75 for our final leg to Key West.

Roadgeekwise, I have accomplished the following thus far...

- "Clinched" the following Florida counties: Manatee, Sarasota, DeSoto, Charlotte, Lee, Collier, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe.

- Driven across "Alligator Alley". (Toll is $2.50.)

- "CLINCHED" I-75 IN FLORIDA!!! (At this point, I have driven every mile of I-75 from Knoxville to Miami.)

- Traveled (for the first time) the Overseas Highway (US 1) all the way from the mainland to Mile 0 in Downtown Key West. (I captured this on video and will feature it on
ROADGEEK-CAM!!! as soon as we get back home.)

Tomorrow morning, we will see the sights of Key West, including the Hemingway House and Harry S. Truman's "Little White House". We'll also be taking in the character of Mallory Square at sundown and visit the world-famous "Southernmost Point" marker.

This evening, we ate at a wonderful little steak and seafood restaurant called "Duffy's", located at the corner of Truman Avenue (US 1) and Simonton Street. Their jumbo shrimp dishes and the key lime pie were awesome IMHO. If you make it to Key West, you gotta eat there. (BTW, you get a free piece of key lime pie if you show up for dinner before 6:30 PM and present a coupon from one of the local travel guides.)

Before we leave, we will make the obligatory visit to Margaritaville and eat a "Cheeseburger In Paradise". (I like mine with lettuce and tomato, Heinz 57 and french fried potatoes...)

Our Florida roadtrip adventure is far from being over. Before we make it back to Atlanta, we will be seeing a few more sights along the way, visit Mary's folks in Lakeland, and add more Interstate miles and counties under my belt.

That's it for now. Thanks for reading and please stay tuned for more.

I really enjoyed the Florida Keys on our research trip for work last year. We drove several of the old segments of the Overseas Highway in conjunction with the research for the fun of it. The water down there is worth seeing alone. Unfortunately its contaminated with bacteria from Castro's Cuba, but it still looks pretty.
