Chattanooga Trip Report

Last weekend, Mary and I took a trip to Chattanooga to see her sister Polly and our nieces "Ash" and "Jen", who were competing in a rowing crew regatta on the Tennessee River.

We did most of our "roadgeeking" on Friday, where I met my "roadgeek goals" as follows...

- Clinched "unsigned I-124" in Downtown Chattanooga.

- Clinched I-24 in Tennessee from the Georgia State Line to I-75.

- Clinched I-24 in Georgia.

- Clinched Marion County, Tennessee.

- Clinched the rest of I-59 in Georgia.

- Visited the "
Camak Stone", the exact point where the Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee state lines meet.

- Clinched Jackson County, Alabama (Alabama's northeasternmost county).

- Shoot some
ROADGEEK-CAM!!! video in Tennessee.

On Saturday afternoon, after leaving the regatta, I decided to take a drive up US 27 to US 127 so that I could do one more thing... clinch Sequatchie County!!!

During our trip, we took boatloads of pictures. I took a few of them and added it to this new special feature page.

New Mile Markers On GA 400

This week, while driving up and down US 19/GA 400 as part of my daily commute to work, I noticed that the Georgia DOT (GDOT) had decided to put new mile markers in Forsyth County... starting with "Mile 23", as opposed to resetting the mile markers at the Forsyth County line.

When GA 400 was originally built, the mile markers started with the southern end of the highway and were "unbroken" all the way up the highway.

Until the GA 400 tollway was completed in August, 2003, "Mile 0" was at I-285 and "Mile 46" was just south of its northern end at GA 60 in Lumpkin County. Upon completion of the tollway, "Mile 0" was moved to 400's new southern end at I-85 and its northernmost mile marker was "Mile 52".

Around the mid-1990s, GDOT decided to "reset" 400's mile markers back to "Mile 0" at each county line, just as GDOT does with surface (non-limited access) highways.

Now that the markers are again "unbroken" up GA 400 (AFAIK), it begs the following questions...

- Will 400's exit numbers be changed to milepost-based, just like the Interstates and the Athens Perimeter?

- Has GDOT changed (or will GDOT change) GA 316's mile markers back to an "unbroken" sequence for its entire length from I-85 to the Athens Perimeter? (If you notice this change, then please let me know.)

That's it for now. Thanks for reading, have a great weekend, and please visit often.

That was a good idea by the GDOT. The continuous mile marker scheme will be easier for navigation.

nm, I just read past that and see you mention the markers were changed in the mid-90s. I presume you meant August 1993? I guess you can delete both comments.

TO ANONYMOUS POSTER: Yes, I meant August, 1993. Thanks for your comment.

Steve -- Love the Web site and the concept. I'm a writer for Georgia Trend magazine working on an article about the DOT and came across your roadgeek blog. I was wondering if we could get together on the phone for an interview. Would love to find out more about 'roadgeeking' and your thoughts about the DOT, the job they've done, maybe even the direction they're headed. Anyway, please respond to my email address as soon as possible and let me know when we can talk for a little bit on the phone. Thanks!

Hi, I had a very disturbing dream last night, twice. Both times I kept having the same thing run through my head, "8.7 Mile Marker 11". It disturbed me enough to start looking for this as soon as I woke up. I have been trying to "Google" mile markers info and can't find anything. Please email me if you can help or if this rings a bell! Thanks!
