Last Friday afternoon just before I met some ham radio friends of mine for lunch, I did a little "roadgeeking" around Chamblee and stumbled upon some more "classic" black-and-white DeKalb County street signs. Here are the pics...
Around 1990, DeKalb County replaced most of its old black-and-white street signs with either overhead signs at signaled intersections or pole-mounted such as this example...
Here's the latest generation of DeKalb County street signs...
Notice the change to all caps and the street designation ("WAY", "BOULEVARD", etc.) being moved to the lower right-hand corner of the sign.
Every chance I get to find an "old school" DeKalb street sign, which is getting rarer and rarer as the county replaces them, I just want to preserve them in pictures for posterity.
Speaking of "old school" signs, here's a classic Georgia DOT "black-and-white" county sign, courtesy of Becky Taylor...
Granted, its condition is far from pristine, but nonetheless, I was quite excited to get a photo.
According to Becky, her grandfather somehow got a hold of this sign after GDOT had discarded it and used it to keep the pigs penned on his farm. Hey, give her grandpa credit for recycling it.
I received this from Becky about a couple of months ago and meant to share this with y'all. Becky, thanks for the photo and I hope you accept my apology for not sharing it sooner.
And on a sad note...
This past Labor Day weekend, legendary singer/guitarist/actor, and fellow Georgian, Jerry Reed died at age 71 of emphysema.
Born Jerry Reed Hubbard in Atlanta in 1937, he is best known to movie fans as trucker Cledus "Snowman" Snow in the 3 "Smokey and the Bandit" movies. Musically, he's best known for his 1970s hit songs "Amos Moses", "When You're Hot, You're Hot", and the SATB I theme song "Eastbound and Down", not to mention a distinct "clawhammer" guitar sound that you can hear on his recordings.
Here's a clip featuring Reed as "Snowman" in the first SATB (the best one of the 3 IMHO)...
Tomorrow night (Saturday, September 6, 2008) at 9:30 PM Eastern Daylight Time, please tune into my talkshow "GRG On BTR" for "A Tribute To Jerry Reed". Fellow Jerry Reed and SATB fan Jason Ilyes will be joining me and I hope y'all will tune in and listen.
BTW, I got to see Jerry in concert back in 1994 at the Toastmasters International convention's "fun night", and boy, did he put on a helluva show for us. Jerry, thanks for the entertainment and may you, Elvis, Chet Atkins, and the rest of Nashville's "dearly departed" have a great eternal jam session in heaven. Rest In His eternal peace.
That's it for now. Thanks for reading and listening, and please come back again.
