An I-520 Update From South Carolina

Here's another case of how it pays to get news feeds from Georgia newspaper websites...

In the latest edition of The Augusta Chronicle, the South Carolina DOT (SCDOT) reports that the work of extending I-520 (Bobby Jones Expressway/Palmetto Parkway) from its current terminus at US 1/78/278 in North Augusta back to I-20 is 65% complete.

At this time, the mileposts on I-520 apparently do not reset once it crosses the Savannah River from Georgia into South Carolina, given that its first South Carolina exit is marked as "Exit 17". I wonder if SCDOT will continue the numbering all the way once I-520 is completed to its portion of I-20?

Also, this will be an anomaly among 3-digit Interstates (3di), as it is an odd-numbered 3di that will begin and end at its parent Interstate. AFAIK, there are no other such odd-numbered 3di's that exist anywhere else here in the States.

Alex, I know you can't wait to travel this new stretch of I-520 once it opens and I look forward to the photos that you may share with us on the Southeast Roads I-520 page.

Furthermore, I look forward to someday "clinching" all of I-520 myself... especially when the South Carolina portion is completed.

That's it for now. Thanks for reading and please join Jason Ilyes and me tonight on GRG On BTR for our tribute to the late Jerry Reed.

Cool. I drove I-520 a few months back: driving from I-20 to US-1, just east of the Georgia state line. Can't wait to drive it when it's finished.

You betcha Steve, I am excited to see the new section, but with a December 31, 2009 opening date slated, we'll all have to wait a bit longer. This project is about the only new freeway that will open anytime soon in S.C. I am sure that the I-73 project will drag onwards before we ever seen a shovelful of dirt turned over. So for now, I'll keep focusing on S.C. backroads and U.S. highways in my travels to the Palmetto State.
