From Juilette, we cross the Ocmulgee River to "clinch" Jones County.

At this point, the road becomes Round Oak-Juliette Road and is the beginning of the Ocmulgee-Piedmont Scenic Byway.

Round Oak-Juliette Road takes you along the southern edge of the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge and toward Jarrell Plantation State Historic Site (which is just south of Round Oak-Juliette Road and well marked with brown signs to direct you there).

After a brief stop at Jarrell Plantation's visitor center, we got back on Round Oak-Juliette and headed east toward its dead end at GA 11 near Round Oak.

The byway continues south along GA 11 toward Gray, but we opted to head north instead and visit Monticello, "clinching" Jasper County in the process.

Monticello (prounounced mon-tuh-SELL-o in these parts) is the hometown of country singer Trisha Yearwood and was one of the filming locations for the movie "My Cousin Vinny".

From downtown Monticello, you can take the Monticello Crossroads Scenic Byway, which radiates in 4 different directions from the square.

Part of the GA 83 northbound leg going toward I-20 and Madison is designated "Trisha Yearwood Parkway" in honor of Ms. Yearwood.

.... and here's a picture Mary took of me in Monticello...

GDOT has a mess of cities on several directional signs they've erected all around the Monticello square. For example...

For the rest of the signs, plus more Monticello photos, please click here to see them in my new Monticello Road Pics gallery.

In Part III, we'll take you from Monticello to Jackson, where US 23 is signed subservient to GA 42.

That's it for now. Thanks for reading and please come back again.
