Tonight, Mary and I went to Flowery Branch to a multi-year South Gwinnett High School (SGHS) class reunion of 1979-1985 alums.
It was really good to see several of the folks I went to high school with back in the late 70's/early 80's and kudos to fellow SGHS 1982 alum Cal Cooper and his army of volunteers for all the hard work and planning they did.
The event was just off GA 53 (Winder Highway) near I-985/US 23/GA 365. Roadgeekwise, it was interesting to see some of the progress GDOT was making on the interchange reconstruction and a fairly new 4-lane divided highway stretch of 53 going toward Chestnut Mountain. When I get some time, I'd like to go back and snap some "roadgeek pics".
Growing up in Snellville, there was always this smiling face of a legendary Gwinnett County crossing guard who worked the South Gwinnett High and W.C. Britt Elementary School area since I was a small child. The legend I am talking about is none other than "Ms. Greta".
One of the things that I always liked was how she waved at us when we'd be driving up and down Skyland Drive and/or US 78/GA 10 (East Main Street). Snellville has changed in so many ways, but rest assured that after all these years, "Ms. Greta" is still there with her smiling face and ever pleasant demeanor helping kids get across an even busier set of Snellville streets.
Here's a photo of "Ms. Greta" and I from tonight's reunion...
Finally, a big "shoutout" to all my fellow South Gwinnett High alums from back in the day. Hope everybody had a great time, and thanks again to Cal and his crew (Mandy, Denean, etc.) for all their hard work and awesome hospitality. If we ever do a SGHS reunion again (even if it's just for the Class of 1982), I hope it's as laid-back as this reunion was.
That's it for now. God bless all my "Snellville homies" and thanks to everyone for reading. Next time, dear readers, I promise to get back to blogging about roads and roadgeeking.

She really is a living legend in Snellville! She always has her great smile on her glowing face! I have two kids graduating in 2012 (hopefully, if Algebra and Chemistry don't destroy that dream!) Reply to this
