In Chamblee and Doraville, "hawks" have taken up residence... and it's not too hard to spot them.

These "hawks" are not of the ornithological kind, but instead, they are High-Intensity Active Crosswalk systems, a special traffic signal that has been placed along several places along Buford Highway (US 23/GA 13). Here are a couple of pics I took last month as I was making my way down the road to a ham radio club meeting...

According to an article in this week's Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Georgia DOT installed these new systems at a cost of $120,000 each, with the hopes of reducing the number of pedestrian-related accidents along one of the Metro Atlanta area's busiest roadways. Whether or not they will be utilized by the folks who live in the vicinity, I don't know, but from having driven on Buford Highway and Roswell Road (US 19/GA 9) near I-285, I have had seen several people vicariously run across these busy thoroughfares and it amazes me that the pedestrian death and injury rates aren't going through the roof. I have a theory as to why some of these "jaywalkers" do it, but I respectfully prefer not to say.

In any event, I do applaud GDOT for taking some steps to help reduce pedestrian-related accidents, and hope that the communities will receive some type of awareness message along the lines of pedestrian safety.

And finally, I extend to you another invitation to "like" us on Facebook by going to www.facebook.com/georgiaroadgeek . On this Facebook page, I've been posting links to several road-related articles from around Georgia. If you're one of the 50 Facebookers who already "like" us, then thanks. If not, then please check it out and thanks in advance for being a new "liker".

That's it for now. Thanks for reading and please come back often.

Yeah, I saw this on the news the other day. When my mom went to the District, they had these on U.S. 29/Georgia Avenue, right on the District-Silver Spring/Montgomery County line.
