Taking a trip down I-185 to (or through) Columbus, Georgia?
This week, the Georgia DOT gave drivers some good news... a higher speed limit on the stretch of I-185 from St. Mary's Road (Exit 3) to Smith Road (Exit 14).
Along this particular stretch of Georgia Interstate, the speed limit was increased from 55 to 65 MPH.
Having driven all of I-185 myself, it did seem a little much to lower the speed limit to 55 once you crossed over from Harris County into Columbus-Muscogee County. Personally, I applaud GDOT for authorizing the higher speed limit, given that they widened and upgraded I-185 inside most of Columbus. Once the remaining few southernmost miles of the freeway are widened, I don't see why GDOT can't just go ahead and allow drivers to do 65 MPH throughout all of I-185 in Columbus.
As for I-185 itself, I am looking forward to the day that GDOT completes Columbus' first "flyover" ramp that will provide a smoother connection from south/eastbound Victory Drive (US 27/280/GA 1/520) to I-185 northbound.
On my next visit to Columbus, I am planning to film videos of I-185, J.R. Allen Parkway (US 80/GA 22/Future GA 540), and the Manchester Expressway (US 27 Alt/ GA 85). I've even got a couple of specific songs in the library to use as soundtracks for I-185 and J.R. Allen. Want to know which ones? Sorry, but you'll have to wait until the videos are filmed, produced, and released.
In the meantime, I wish all my "peeps" in Columbus (home of "the duck", the Infantry, and soon to be the new home of the Armor) a big, fat "Happy Motoring!" as you enjoy your new 65 MPH speed limit on I-185.
That's it for now. Keep the bugs off your glass and "Smokey" off your... and please visit often.
